There is a hidden danger buzzing behind the walls of millions of American homes, schools, and businesses. It cannot be seen, smelled, or touched, but compelling evidence suggests it’s affecting our health!
What is it?
Dirty electricity refers to surges and spikes of electromagnetic energy traveling along power lines and building wires, where only conventional (“clean”) electricity should be.
- Dirty power
- Electrical noise
- Line noise
- Power line EMI (electromagnetic interference)
- Microsurge electrical pollution
- Harmonics and voltage transients
It is one of four types of EMF pollution now common in homes and other buildings.

Where Does Dirty Electricity Come From?
Dirty electricity is created by electronics, appliances, energy-efficient lights, and other devices that run on electricity. It is not a brand new problem, but is much more common now than in the past. WHY? Because many modern devices no longer use conventional electricity “as is.” Instead, they must change or manipulate electrical current in one way or another to operate.
Some Ways Modern Devices Manipulate Electricity
Many draw electrical current in short pulses (bits) rather than in a smooth, continuous stream.
Many must change AC electricity (alternating current) to DC electricity (direct current).
Many reduce voltage from 120 Volts to one or more lower voltages. Voltage is the force, or pressure, that helps push electrical current through wires, cords, equipment circuitry, etc.
Changes and manipulations like those summarized above cause many interruptions in the smooth flow of electrical current. It is these interruptions that produce dirty electricity or, in technical terms, the surges and spikes of current and voltage known as harmonics and high frequency voltage transients.
These days, it’s common for dirty electricity from multiple sources and at different frequencies (or vibrations) to be traveling along building wires simultaneously, creating a chaotic mess of “electrical trash” on our wiring.
Dirty Electricity SPREADS!
Once created, dirty electricity spreads. Some dirty electricity radiates directly off equipment and appliances into the air. Even more travels throughout a building via the electrical wiring in walls and ceilings and sometimes under floors. It also moves up and down power cords that are plugged into outlets. As dirty electricity flows along wiring and cords, it emits potentially harmful EMFs (electromagnetic fields) into rooms and other spaces where people spend time.
Amazingly, dirty electricity can even move from one building to another via power lines and other means. This has a very important implication. These days even if you were able to remove all dirty electricity producers from inside a home or other setting, it is likely there would still be dirty electricity present on the wiring in the building. This is because some or a lot of dirty electricity created elsewhere (in neighbors’ homes for example) can find its way into the building and then spread via electrical wiring.
Common Sources of Dirty Electricity
The list of equipment, appliances, and other devices that produce dirty electricity is LONG! Nearly every electronic and modern appliance we plug in today creates dirty electricity. Some of the biggest offenders include…
Light dimmer switches
Equipment, appliances, and other devices with motors (especially variable speed motors)
For example: Refrigerators, front load washing machines, energy-efficient HVAC equipment, pool pumps, vacuums, hair dryers, blenders, etc.
Equipment, appliances, and other devices with transformers or switch mode power supplies.
Solar panel inverters
Smart utility meters
Benefits of Reducing
Exposure To Dirty Electricity
Scientific and anecdotal evidence point to concerning connections between dirty electricity exposure and a variety of health problems. People who have taken steps to reduce their exposure to EMFs (electromagnetic fields) from dirty electricity report a range of benefits, including these examples.
Increased Focus and Concentration
Enhanced Mood and Sense of Calm
Fewer Headaches and Less Body Pain
More Stable Blood Sugar Levels
(among some diabetics)
Fewer Tremors and Spasms
(among some with MS)
Reduce Inhaler Use
(among some with asthma)
Greater Overall Health and Well-Being
How To Reduce Your
Exposure to Dirty Electricity
There are two MAIN strategies for reducing your exposure to dirty electricity: 1) Reducing sources of dirty electricity in your environment and 2) installing dirty electricity filters. These strategies are typically used together to achieve optimal results.
Reduce Sources of Dirty Electricity in Your Environment
You may be surprised to discover how many dirty electricity sources there are in most homes and other buildings. We recommend becoming familiar with the types of equipment, appliances, and devices that produce dirty electricity, and then considering the following questions.
Which dirty electricity sources in your environment are you willing to get rid of entirely?
Which dirty electricity sources can you replace with similar items that don’t generate dirty electricity?
How can you reduce your use of dirty electricity sources that you can’t give up or don’t want to?
A Few Specific Ideas
- Replace energy-efficient light bulbs – such as CFLs or low-voltage LED and halogen bulbs – with light bulbs that run on 120 Volts (e.g., traditional incandescent bulbs, halogen incandescent bulbs, line voltage LEDs).
- Turn off and unplug electronics and other electrical devices when you are not using them. Alternatively, you can plug these devices into a power strip with an ON/OFF switch. Turn the switch OFF when you are not using the items plugged into the strip.
- Use your laptop in battery mode whenever possible. If you use the laptop while it’s plugged into an AC power source or your Internet router, make sure to ground the laptop and router. (See “Safer use of Computers” by Oram Miller for details.)
- Replace light dimmer switches with regular ON/OFF switches.
Install Dirty Electricity Filters
Dirty electricity filters, like the Greenwave Filters shown above, are designed to significantly reduce the level of dirty electricity flowing along the electrical wiring in buildings. The idea being… the less dirty electricity there is flowing along building wires, the less that will radiate into rooms where you and others spend time.
Greenwave filters are EASY to use. Simply plug them into electrical outlets or power strips for immediate results. The filters utilize capacitive technology to “short out” (shunt) erratic surges/spikes of electrical energy while allowing conventional AC electricity to pass through unimpeded.
Most Greenwave filter models come with a built-in outlet at their base for plug-through convenience. You can plug electronics and other devices into the filters when you need an outlet.
The filters also meet rigorous safety standards (e.g., UL, CE, and/or SEMKO) and are RoHS compliant. RoHS regulations limit or ban the use of hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and phthalates in electronic and electrical equipment.
The effectiveness of dirty electricity filters can be measured with Greenwave’s Broadband EMI Meter. Simply plug the meter into electrical outlets to find out how much dirty electricity is flowing along nearby wiring. The meter can show “BEFORE filter” and “AFTER filter” measurements on the same screen simultaneously, making comparisons easy.
The meter is also an excellent tool for identifying sources of dirty electricity in your environment and for guiding the installation of Greenwave filters. It can help you determine the best number of filters to install in each room and where to place them for optimal results.
